While algebra and exponents come easy for him, love and trust does not. With the help of his therapist (Robin Williams), Will begins to deal with his low self-esteem, fear of intimacy, and past physical abuse, until Will uses his intelligence and goes after Skylar (Minnie Driver), a woman who loved him uncondiionally, to proclaim a life worth living.

"Everyone across the board is outstanding, even the characters on the edge of the story such as Professor Lambeau played by the outstanding actor Stellan Skarsgård."   ...Current Film

"Stellan Skarsgård and Robin Williams draw you into their characters, who are so lucid and intriguing that you hang on their every word."  ...24 Frames Per Second

"Skarsgård brings passion and audience empthy to the part of a mathematician scholar who feels awe, frustration and envy in the presence of Will's genius."   ...Film Journal

"Lambeau, played with deliciously coldblooded single-mindedness by the Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård... Both Damon and Affleck are major stars in the making, and the situations they've devised for themselves and veterans Skarsgård, Williams, and Driver are substantive and thought-provoking."   ...The Record (NJ)

"As Professor Lambeau,  Stellan Skarsgård (Breaking the Waves) projects an intellectual arrogance that is all the more fascinating because it yields so easily in the face of a greater intelligence - i.e., Will's."   ...The Orlando Sentinel

"Especially brilliant are Damon's barroom verbal brawl with a Harvard intellectual and Affleck's role as Will's "chief negotiator."  In fine form as well are Driver and Skarsgård... this is the sort of honest and moving story that Hollywood doesn't put out much anymore."

"As famous mathematics Professor Lambeau, Stellan Skarsgård from Breaking the Waves does a wonderful job in the part most easily ignored."  ...Film critic Steve Rhodes

"Despite its schematic layout and predictable outcome, the ensemble acting is of such a high level - particularly that of Robin Williams, Matt Damon and Stellan Skarsgård - that the impact on his audience is spellbinding."   ...Film critic Harvey Karten

"Stellan Skarsgård (Breaking the Waves) perfectly captures the arrogance and ease of a confident, award-winning mathematics professor."   ...Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

"A smart cast led by top-billed Robin Williams, along with Minnie Driver and Stellan Skarsgård, keeps it fresh."   ...San Francisco Chronicle

"Stellan Skarsgård is driven, passionate, and surprisingly sympathetic as the professor that wants to see Will live up to his 'potential'".  ...Looking Closer Review

"Director Gus Van Sant brings a different sensibility to the film... He's assisted by glowing performances from his cast. The two veterans, Robin Williams and Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, bring rich textures to Sean Maguire and Gerald Lambeau."   ...Sunday Online, Australia

"Stellan Skarsgård is utterly convincing as a professor facing up to his own limitations in the face of once in a generation genius."  ...DVD Verdict

"Swedish actor Skarsgård hits the bull's-eye as big-time mathematician Lambeau, who is astounded, admirative, discreetly jealous and upset before the genius of the street-kid parole."  ...Film critic Edwin Jahiel

"Driver's to-die-for gal pal is especially vibrant, while Skarsgård commendably bypasses the usual stuffy scholar routine in favor of a more complex instructor who's bowled over - and intimidated - by Will's brilliance."   ...Syracuse New Times

"Affleck, Skarsgard and Minnie Driver, as a Harvard undergrad who becomes infatuated with Will, have superb moments."  ...Cleveland Sun

"Stellan Skarsgard (from Breaking the Waves) gives another good performance as a mathematician who finds Will, someone capable of teaching him, but would rather hang out with his friends."   ...News and Entertainment

"Damon is more than perfect in the title role. His quick dialogs and defensive scenes are definitely hard to forget. Affleck is a great support as his best friend, Skarsgård compelling as the frustrated winner and Minnie Driver unforgettable as the woman who loves the genius."  ...Critic Society
